A Well

In baking, you can put all of the dry ingredients in a bowl and bank them on the sides, leaving a big open space–a well. To me, it is the big vast open place that has the potential to hold everything that falls in its space… the necessary, such as the good, and the unnecessary, such as the hurt. 

All of the wet stuff falls in place, tears included, and the mix of the dry and wet ingredients blend together in a way that you forget which was which. Something new is created. What was doesn’t seem nearly as important as what is to become. The potential is enough. 

Our pound cake holds a lot of feelings, but it’s simply made to nourish the places in us that need to be fed. We can slice it anyway we want, but we need everything to come together in this dessert, at this moment that we say… it is well with my soul.
