Humble Pie

By: Lauren Young, Founder of Sweet LaLa’s Bakery

There are so many ways to make a pie. I’ve had to embrace a lot of humility in particular when making a pecan pie. There is an exactness to the baking.  If it cooks too long, it hardens. If it doesn’t cook long enough, it’s a soupy mess. I’ve done both.

When we first opened Sweet LaLa’s Bakery, our head cake decorator Liz presented several ideas about what we could put on the menu.  One of my favorites was when she took my cookie dough recipe and formed a tiny pie of goodness that fits in the palm of your hand.  It’s perfect and precise, and it can be filled with just about anything. It does not disappoint, whatever you put in it. She coined it “Humble Pie.”

Humble Pie

We all come from humble beginnings and may need a reminder every now and then. “To eat a slice of humble pie” is an expression that has its origins in admitting when mistakes are made, one needs a slice of humble pie. If only it was this easy, I’d take a daily dose.

Mistakes happen all of the time.  In our kitchen, in our ordering process, in our design, in our lives.  Sometimes we can turn them into happy accidents.  Sometimes we just need to admit we fell short.  Either way, a healthy dose of humility can be just what the day ordered.

Humble pie is what we are serving at our place, so when you need it, we got you covered. We have plenty to go around.
